The Coffin of “Kha”

A mummified body was protected by a coffin, which began to be used as early as 3000 B.C.E. The shape changed from rectangular to anthropomorphic from 1700 B.C.E onwards and there could be more than one in one coffin, or one inside the other. Over time, the materials, shape and decoration changed, but in the human-shaped ones, the deceased is always depicted in their ideal image. Here you see the coffin of “Kha”, the person in charge of the building works and who lived in Deir el Medina between 1425-1353 B.C.E.
